"The importance of Huawei overtaking Apple this quarter can not be overstated", said Canalys analyst Ben Stanton. Many companies have tried to rise above the likes of Apple and Samsung only to drop off the map later.

Outside of China, Huawei's increasing brand recognition newly allowing it to compete at the top end, but the Chinese market remains key for Huawei as it has come under fire from the US, Australia and other nations over concerns it could facilitate Chinese government spying.

According to Counterpoint Research's latest analysis on the Indian smartphone market, the premium smartphone segment (₹30,000 and above) grew 19 percent annually and 10 percent sequentially during Q2 2018. Not only that, but Counterpoint reports that during the second quarter of this year OnePlus shipped more premium phones than Samsung for the first time in its history. Huawei replaced Apple as the second largest vendor by shipping 54.2 million units and capturing 15.8% market share. With new players based out of China entering the race, smartphone goliaths like Samsung and Apple are struggling to hold on to their position in the market.

Meanwhile, Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, pointed out in a statement released with the numbers, by way of a reminder, that Apple has moved into the top spot during each of the last two holiday quarters following its product refresh.

OnePlus India general manager Vikas Agarwal said the brand had become the largest premium brand in India in little over three years. Despite the iPhone X receiving a lukewarm response, the company saw a 1 percent increase in its iPhone shipments during Q2, 2018. It shipped 153 million mobiles past year, with its P20 and P20 Pro handsets popular.

Apple shipments were static at 41.3 million despite the fact the firm is selling nine models rather than the six it did this time previous year. The IDC report claims that Huawei's GPU Turbo technology fared pretty well in terms of marketing, as it helped the brand achieve the stupendous sales figure. Huawei has been expanding aggressively in Europe and Africa, though it is blocked from the US. Apple falls into the #3 spot, with Huawei at #2 and Samsung holding fast to #1.
