Luxury yacht in graft probe arrives in Malaysian port

A man covers his mouth as he walks past a 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) billboard at the funds flagship Tun Razak Exchange development in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, February 27, 2015.

The Cayman Island-registered vessel Equanimity, which is reportedly worth some US$250 million and is owned by Jho Low, a former unofficial adviser to the Malaysian fund 1MDB, is pictured at Benoa harbor on Indonesia's resort island of Bali on April 13, 2018.

The announcement came after Najib, who suffered a shock defeat in May elections, was summoned for a new round of questioning by the anti-corruption agency.

In the video, Dr Mahathir also expressed his gratitude to the Indonesian government for its cooperation in returning the seized super yacht to the Malaysian government. Indonesia then agreed it would hand over the yacht to Malaysia. United States investigators said Low bought the yacht with proceeds diverted from 1MDB.

On Sunday, Low issued a statement through his lawyers condemning Malaysia's possession of the yacht, claiming the move was "politically motivated" and that the decision went against court rulings in the USA and Indonesia.

Low's whereabouts are unknown but he has previously denied wrongdoing.

Mahathir said any claimants to the yacht should provide proof that it belonged to them, and where they got the money to pay for it.

The ex-defence minister who was a strong proponent of the King Salman Centre for International Peace says Malaysia's cooperation would have been meaningful.

The fund, founded by Najib, is at the center of money-laundering probes in at least six countries, including the United States, Switzerland and Singapore.

The government has said it plans to open the Equanimity to public viewing, before eventually selling it off.

"It is a loss to the government and to the nation", he said in a statement today.

The DoJ has sought to take custody of the Equanimity, after it was seized by Indonesia in February at the request of USA authorities as part of a multi-billion dollar anti-kleptocracy investigation into 1MDB.

The US Department of Justice has said more than $4bn was misappropriated by high-level officials from the fund and their associates.

A luxury yacht allegedly bought with money stolen from the multibillion-dollar looting of a state investment fund arrived Tuesday at a Malaysian port.
