The Boeing 737-800, landing after a flight from Xiamen "went off the runway during a heavy downpour", said Connie Bungag, the officer in charge of Manila International Airport Authority's (MIAA) public affairs office.

Images of the plane operated by Xiamen Air, a subsidiary of China Southern Airlines, showed it next to an airport perimeter fence with the left wing touching the ground.

As of press time, the disabled 66-ton aircraft has remained an obstacle during the last 12 hours on runway 06-24, preventing the landing and takeoff of all flights.

The main runway at Manila's global airport would remain closed until 5 a.m. on Saturday (2100 GMT on Friday) to allow for more time to remove the plane, authorities said.

Investigators retrieved the plane's flight recorder and will get the cockpit voice recorder once the aircraft has been lifted to determine the cause of the accident, Sydiongco said.

Flights from the Middle East and the United States were diverted to the global airport at Clark, north of Manila, and to the central island of Cebu. The plane circled before finally landing near midnight but lost contact with the tower, Sydiongco said.

The aircraft is still resting on its belly near the end of the airport's main runway where it came to a stop after the accident. The regulator said it also sent a team to Xiamen Air.
