Pence said that President Trump will request $8 billion over the next five years to support military operations in space.

Vice President Pence described the White House's plans for a Space Force, a sixth branch of the USA military that would be responsible for operations in outer space, in a speech on Thursday.

Pence outlined a series of steps the Pentagon will undertake ahead of the creation of Space Force. We'll work it through the Congress.

Despite no details, and no timetable, the Space Force will require congressional approval.

Thursday's announcement coincided with a report detailed by the Pentagon on how the newest branch of the USA military is set to work.

As the US continues to stave off competition and threats from both Russian Federation and China, the White House has decided it will create the US Space Force as a sixth, separate military service by 2020.

He laid out what the U.S. perceived as threats from Moscow and Beijing in particular, who are developing new weapons for use in space as well as improving their ability to counter existing systems, such as GPS.

The Pentagon's report, which was provided to Congress shortly before Pence's speech, also seeks to establish a new acquisition agency, the Space Development Agency, "charged with rapidly developing and fielding next-generation capabilities", not unlike the role the Missile Defense Agency plays in missile defense.

The report also calls for the creation of "a Space Operations Force of career space experts who are trained, promoted and retained as space warfighting professionals" to include engineers, scientists, intelligence experts, operators and strategists.

As a Hugo-winning scifi writer, I feel qualified to say: The United States needs quality health care for its people far more than it needs a "Space Force".

Mr. Mattis added that he's been in close consultation with Mr. Pence, who heads the White House's National Space Council, and other top administration officials.

"Our nation's armed forces have always been the vanguard of advancing American leadership here on Earth and beyond", Pence said. The Trump administration believes the Space Force will allow it to accomplish that goal, and the nation now has at least the beginnings of a plan to bring its fifth military branch to fruition.

So, before we can "have the Space Force", as Trump put it, the White House will have to convince lawmakers that the USA really needs it. He said Beijing and Moscow have been developing missiles, lasers and other technologies with the aim of targeting U.S. satellites.

He warned about developments made by Russian Federation and China claiming that "hypersonic" weapons were nearly a reality.

In a speech at the Pentagon, Pence warned of the advancements that potential adversaries were making and issued what amounted to a call to arms to preserve the military's dominance in space.

Star Wars fan and comedy writer Brian Santa Maria is hoping that camping out for Star Wars: Episode I tickets back in 1999 will now qualify him for a Space Force GI Bill.

Only Congress has the authority to establish a new branch of the military-something that hasn't happened since the U.S. Air Force was founded in 1947.
