Petrol price stood just a paisa short of Rs 80 a litre for the first time ever and diesel shot up to Rs 72.07 on Friday in Delhi, where local taxes are among the lowest in the country. In Kolkata, petrol costs Rs 82.88 and diesel Rs 74.92.
In Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai petrol cost Rs 87.39, Rs 86.41and Rs 83.13 per litre respectively. On Friday, the oil marketing companies increased the prices of petrol by 48 paise and that of diesel by 52 paise per litre in Delhi. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley mentions that the worldwide prices are volatile.
The Congress has chose to call a nationwide bandh on Monday, September 10 over the issue of rising fuel prices. In Hyderabad, petrol costs Rs 84.81 and diesel Rs 78.39. Petrol at Rs 79.99 per litre has nearly touched 80-mark in Delhi. The present petrol and diesel prices in Bangalore are Rs 82.1 per litre and Rs 73.9 per litre while that in Chennai are Rs 82.6 per litre and Rs 75.6 per litre. "Although fuel prices are going up by 50 paise a day, we cannot ask our clients to increase contract value daily, as this can only be done in case of a quarterly review". While rising crude oil prices is being posed as one of the reasons behind increasing prices, reportedly, the crude oil prices between the years 2011 to 2013 crossed the $100 mark.
