Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen dies at the age of 65

Allen's sister, Jody, released a statement through the company.

"Today we mourn our boss, mentor and friend whose 65 years were too short - and acknowledge the honor it has been to work alongside someone whose life transformed the world". "He possessed a remarkable intellect and a passion to solve some of the world's most hard problems, with the conviction that creative thinking and new approaches could make profound and lasting impact", Vulcan Inc.

Soon after leaving Microsoft, Allen launched Vulcan, a holding company for his diverse business and philanthropic interests.

Allen said earlier this month that he was being treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the same kind of cancer her battled and overcame almost a decade ago. Allen was 22 years old then, Gates only 19. In fact, he organized a deal that got Microsoft QDOS operating system after the company landed a contract with IBM to develop DOS in 1980.

In the last few years, Allen has financially backed expeditions searching for the remains of both Japanese and American vessels. Allen departed in 1983 amid tensions with Gates and after being diagnosed with cancer.

Police had recorded 12 child murders in the city in two years, which they believed to be linked, according to the BBC. The victim was found dead in a dumpster on January 9, 2018, after she went missing from a relative's house.

The US businessman was also the owner of the NBA basketball team Portland Trail Blazers from OR and the NFL American football team Seattle Seahawks.

However, the Seattle native also reached the pinnacle of success as a professional franchise owner, winning the Super Bowl in 2014 and MLS Cup in 2016 with the Seahawks and Sounders.

He is estimated to have donated more than $2bn to philanthropy throughout his life including science, education and wildlife conservation causes, the Associated Press report.

Allen, also a well-known philanthropist, is one of the world's wealthiest people, ranking 44th on Forbes's 2018 list of the world's billionaires.

Vulcan is also the force behind numerous cultural institutions in Seattle, from the Museum of Pop Culture (founded by Allen and previously known as the Experience Music Project) to the Seattle Art Fair to the city's Cinerama movie theater.
