Elon Musk says first tunnel is almost done, opens December 10: tweet

Elon Musk tweets a date for the opening of his first Los Angeles tunnel

Taking to Twitter, the billionaire SpaceX founder said his underground tunnel for the project "is nearly done" and will be ready on December 10.

He added the shuttles themselves will have a top speed of 155 miles per hour inside the tunnel, surpassing the results of an earlier electric sled test which reached 125 miles per hour.

Musk said on Twitter last night that he expects the first tunnel, running under Hawthorne from the Spacex base in Los Angeles, California, to open on the night of 10 December and hold free rides for the public the following day.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, said on Twitter on Sunday that his Boring Company, which aims to lower the cost of building high-speed transit tunnels, has nearly completed its first tunnel.

The tunnel beneath the L.A. suburb of Hawthorne acts as a proof of concept for the Boring Company's proposed loop system.

Some areas could see up to 18 inches of rainfall, likely triggering flash flooding and landslides in mountainous areas. Hurricane force winds extended out 40km from the storm's core and tropical storm force winds were up to 130km out.

One of the proposed routes would take passengers from the USA capital - the District of Columbia, to NY in under 30 minutes. In theory, hyperloops could allow travel faster than the speed of sound.

In April, the Los Angeles City Council's public works committee unanimously approved an environmental review exemption for a Boring Co. tunnel that could run 2.7 miles through West L.A.

Hyperloop is one of Musk's envelope-pushing ventures, along with SpaceX and Tesla Motors.

He subsequently paid a $20 million fine to settle after the US Securities and Exchange Commission accused the entrepreneur of fraud. Companies developing the technology include Virgin Hyperloop One and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies.

And Canadian company Transpod is working to begin testing the system in France.
