Senate President, Bukola Saraki congratulates Atiku Abubakar

Sokoto State governor and Presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) Aminu Tambuwal on Saturday said only a candidate that understands the complexities of the country can deliver it from challenges.

Atiku emerged as the candidate of the PDP after defeating 11 other aspirants at the party's convention in Rivers state.

Coming a distant third was the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

Abubakar hopes to replicate Buhari's 2015 feat of winning a presidential election at the fourth attempt after he left the ruling APC party in November and re-joined the PDP a month later.

Speaking with our correspondent in Akure on Sunday on the development, the Secretary General of the Afenifere, Bashorun Sehinde Arogbofa, described Atiku as a politician who had paid his dues in Nigeria politics.

Port Harcourt streets had been festooned with conference banners, while police said thousands of officers were deployed to the PDP primary.

"We are expecting a very good convention, we are working very hard to deliver a process that is credible, free, fair and acceptable", he said.

Governor Wike took his leave immediately after congratulating victor of the PDP Presidential aspirant, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The National chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, is meeting with Governors under the party at his campaign office along Aso Drive in Abuja.

Abubakar has already run for the presidency four times.

The retired general, who headed a military regime in the 1980s, has faced growing pressure to step down because of failing health after spending several months in London a year ago receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment.

While thanking other members of the party for their commitment to democratic principles, he warned that PDP should not be intoxicated by power come next year.

They will be deciding who shall represent the party ahead of the presidential election in February 2019.
