'Sad day for Oshawa': Politicians react to GM closure

This is devastating news for the thousands of GM workers in Oshawa.

"We supported GM, as everyone remembers, years ago when they were in trouble ... our history goes back 100 years with General Motors and to say we're disappointed is an understatement".

He said the move was part of a wider need to stay nimble and adapt, especially after the 2008 recession.

GM names the Lordstown, Ohio, factory that makes the Chevrolet Cruze compact and the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, where the Chevrolet Volt, Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac CT6 are produced.

Oshawa Mayor John Henry said the closure would have ripple effects well beyond his city.

The Prime Minister's Office said Sunday it is "very disappointed" and concerned with the news General Motors Canada is planning to shut down its plant in Oshawa, Ont.

GM also said it will reduce salaried and salaried contract staff by 15 per cent, which includes 25 per cent fewer executives.

Workers said they were creating a blockade, stopping trucks carrying supplies from entering the plant.

Trudeau faced questions going into a cabinet meeting Tuesday morning about whether there was anything the federal government could do to keep the Oshawa plant open.

"The ones that are sole-sourced to the plant, you know, who've been living off GM rather than getting out and hustling other business, they're vulnerable". Two transmission plants, in Warren, Mich., and in Baltimore, also will close.
