Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), retired National Football League quarterback Roger Staubach, former Minnesota Supreme Court justice and National Football League star Alan Page, and philanthropist and donor Miriam Adelson, who is married to GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson.

One of the recipients of the medal, the USA government's highest civilian honour, was late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who passed away at age 79 in 2016.

"This award should have been given to him a long time ago", Trump said, noting that he had a "great devotion" to the United States and "raised a lot of money" for children and "a lot of hell".

Recipients include doctor and Republican Party donor Miriam Adelson, wife of Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson.

On Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump honored Page and six other recipients with the highest civilian honor in the nation.

Miriam Adelson said she is "deeply humbled and moved by this exceptional honor".

The grassroots protest movement dubbed the "yellow vests" targeted motorway sliproads, tunnel entrances and airport access roads. The tax increases are part of an effort to move away from a reliance on fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

In an eyebrow-raising moment, the president listed off the names of the couple's nine children and then, looking at her, paused to quip, "You were very busy, wow".

The decision to grant Adelson the award was met by some criticism because Adelson, a physician and philanthropist, is also well known for being a political power player with her billionaire husband Sheldon Adelson.

Devine said that while Miriam Adelson isn't the first campaign contributor to receive a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the size of her campaign contributions sets her apart from the rest.

Public Citizen, an American public interest group told the Guardian "it was hard to believe the decision to recognise Miriam Adelson was based on merit".

Clarifying the choices, the White House claimed it had followed the example of previous administrations' processes. It was coordinated by the staff secretary's office, incorporating recommendations from the public, relevant presidential advisory bodies, the Cabinet and senior White House staff.

President Donald Trump is awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom today to seven people, one of them being Roger Staubach.
