Washington coach Jay Gruden was asked on his conference call Tuesday if the team considered signing Kaepernick, who has been a free agent for more than a year. Signing Kaepernick would enable the Redskins to build a foundation on a running game with concepts they've already run this season, with the quarterback as a threat in the running game.
Now the Redskins will turn to Mark Sanchez, who starts at QB next Sunday for the Redskins (6-6) against the visiting New York Giants (4-8).
He's the second Redskins quarterback to go down with a season-ending injury - joining starter Alex Smith. "It's just going to be a matter of which way you want to go".
"Not a lot of time to really get a brand new quarterback and new system installed and taught in a couple of days of practice", Gruden said.
Gruden added: "He's been talked about and discussed, but we'll probably go in a different direction".
When asked if Kaepernick's stances on social justice - which has caused controversy throughout the league - had anything to do with the decision, he replied the choice was "strictly football".
Mayfield will vote for Murray to win Heisman Trophy
Murray replaced last year's Heisman victor , Baker Mayfield , for the Sooners and has been just as good. Passing: 348/496 (70.2 percent), 4,580 yards, 47 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 175.77 passer rating.
"He's been discussed for sure", Gruden said. "Not that Colin can't do some of the things that I'm talking about, but somebody with a little bit of familiarity". The team had a short week before playing on Thanksgiving and Gruden wanted someone who could fit in as soon as possible. "That's why we went with Sanchez".
Washington reportedly is setting its sights on another former San Francisco quarterback to backup Sanchez.
The Redskins signed Sanchez in part because their passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell played with him in NY.
There has been an exuberance of quarterback injuries this season, yet Kaepernick still is unsigned.
"Gruden said if it were Week 1, there would be a "great possibility" of signing Kaepernick".
