Former US President George Bush dies at age 94, family spokesman says

George Bush Sr was visited by former president Barack Obama two days ago, according to the family's spokesman.

Following a failed run for the Senate in 1964, Bush entered the US House of Representatives in 1967, serving two terms, until a second bid for the Senate in 1970 again ended in failure.

"Our hearts ache with his loss, and we, with the American people, send our prayers to the entire Bush family, as we honor the life and legacy of 41".

The Bushes had been regular fixtures in their adopted hometown of Houston after his presidency, but public appearances became more rare because of health problems as they reached their 90s.

Bush was married for 73 years to the former Barbara Pierce, a woman he met in his teenage years.

The senior Bush had a lifetime of public service before he became president - as a young Navy pilot in World War II, Texas congressman, Central Intelligence Agency director and faithful vice president to Ronald Reagan.

Democratic Senator Mark Warner said: "George H.W. Bush was a class act - a person of tremendous strength and moral character who exemplified the values of public service".

Bush - who was born on June 12, 1924 in Milton, Massachusetts into a wealthy New England political dynasty - put his inevitable political career on hold to join the US Navy during World War II.

George Snr - nicknamed "41" to distinguish himself from his son, "43" - was the 41st President of the United States.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath says Bush died shortly after 10 pm Friday, about eight months after the death of his wife, Barbara Bush.

In February 2011, then President Barack Obama awarded Bush the highest USA civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom. She died at 92 in April 2018. It was perhaps the high point of Bush's presidency, his approval rating among USA voters reaching a record 89 percent, with a fireworks display lighting the night-time sky over Washington to salute the successful mission.

Bush served as Vice President to Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, and in 1988 won the Republican nomination for president.

George Snr's actions after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait led to the destruction of Iraq's armies and the restoration of Kuwait's independence.

They added: "Our thoughts are with the entire Bush family tonight - and all who were inspired by George and Barbara's example".

He had to ditch one plane in the Pacific and was shot down on September 2, 1944, while completing a bombing run against a Japanese radio tower.
