This is the eighth funeral train in USA history and the first since Dwight D. Eisenhower's body traveled from the National Cathedral in Washington through seven states to his Kansas hometown of Abilene 49 years ago.

His death also reduces membership in the club of living ex-presidents to four: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama.

Bush's beloved service dog, Sully, faithfully joined his companion on his final journey to Washington, DC and on Tuesday sat at attention a few moments next to the casket as the President lay in state at the U.S. Capitol rotunda.

The train will bring the former president to his final resting place at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.

Mourners lined up to enter the Capitol beginning Monday evening for the public viewing.

The images come just days after Sully's Instagram account shared a photo of the visibly sad pup in front of Bush's casket.

"I'm just here to pay my respects", said Jane Hernandez, a retired physician.

There were chills for sure in Smithtown, where Sully was trained by America's VetDogs.

Bush is the 12th USA president to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda. "He was the Republican presidential nominee in 1996", writes Fox News. The late President Bush called Trump a "blowhard".

The federal government and some financial exchanges will be closed on Wednesday for a day of mourning.
