This initiative is also part of Microsoft's reflection that represents how much the Office family of apps have evolved over the past five years since the icons last received an update.

The Redmond, Washington-based tech giant announced the sweeping changes to its Office app icons in a on Thursday. I'm forever losing Outlook among a sea of blue icons-Word, Edge, OneDrive, Teams, Yammer, and Skype-and yearn for a return to the golden glory days. The colors have been changed to be "bolder, lighter, and friendlier" as a nod to how Office has developed; the design has evolved to be simpler in accordance with gestalt principles - each icon looks like it belongs with the others to symbolize app interoperability.

"We've infused our tools with powerful artificial intelligence: you can get insights from data with less effort, write a paper using your voice or make your resume using LinkedIn insights".

Although there are other companies that offer Office suites and many of them are rather good such as Apple's iWork and Google's G Suite are two of the prime examples but Microsoft has dominated this space and continues to do so.

The redesigns implement Microsoft's language which the company has incorporated into Windows 10 since a year ago.

The company has been working on a single core codebase for Office, which is now available across Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.

The Microsoft Office icons are getting a modern makeover.

"Our design solution was to de-couple the letter and the symbol from the icons, essentially creating two panels (one for the letter and one for the symbol) that we can pair or separate".

The new logos look three-dimensional and more like modern app thumbnails. Despite that, these new icons look familiar and are easy to identify. Outlook Mobile, in particular, is getting overhauled with support for shared mailboxes and updated gestures.
