With its new 5G modem, the 855 SoC is most likely to power the upcoming 5G phones early next year.
We've known for a while now that Samsung is going to make a 5G version of the Galaxy S10, set to launch in Korea and other markets where 5G coverage is set to go live in the coming months. Enabling 5G connectivity in the Modo Mod is Qualcomm's X50 modem, the same modem reportedly used by the Snapdragon 855.
(It's unclear if this pattern will continue with the S10.) Samsung is at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019 where the Snapdragon 855 has been unveiled, which we're taking that to mean the company is nearly certain to include the new Snapdragon on its next flagship.
More information on the Snapdragon 855 should be released over the next few days during the Snapdragon Technology Summit. Verizon also has plans with Samsung to carry the same phone. Without 5G, the 855 is just another process shrink (rumors peg this as Qualcomm's first 7nm chipset), which is no small achievement (PUN!), but not much of a compelling marketing story.
