Blood Pressure Medication Recall Expanded

Blood pressure meds recalled over contamination concern

Voluntary recall issued for blood-pressure drugs over substance linked to cancer

Given the high frequency of recalls, many experts have called for improving control of manufacturing processes as the affected drugs were traced back to factories in China and India.

All have been found to have trace amounts of N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) and are manufactured by different companies.

A full list of the recalled products is posted on the FDA's website.

This week Aurobindo Pharma USA announced a voluntary recall of 78 lots of valsartan tablets, and Torrent Pharmaceuticals expanded its voluntary recall of losartan potassium tablets to a total of 10 lots.

The agency says patients should not stop taking the medication as that could lead to greater risk, but instead to talk to their doctor about other treatment options.

Amlodipine Valsartan Tablets USP, Valsartan HCTZ Tablets, USP and Valsartan Tablets USP are used to control high blood pressure and for the treatment of heart failure.

A month ago, the FDA provided an update about its ongoing recall of heart and blood pressure medication due to impurities that could cause cancer. Torrent Pharmaceuticals Limited is notifying its distributors and customers by phone and in writing to immediately discontinue distribution of the specific lots being recalled and to notify their sub-accounts.

So far, the pharmaceutical company that issued the recall has not received any reports of adverse effects of the drugs, FDA officials said.

Losartan potassium tablets USP are used to treat hypertension, hypertensive patients with Left Ventricular Hypertrophy and nephropathy in Type 2 diabetic patients.

This recall comes after the U.S. recall on sartan products, including valsartan, last year, and the ongoing efforts into the Europe-wide investigation into the contamination of these products. Anyone with questions about returning the drugs can call Qualanex at 1-888-280-2040 at any time, but will speak to a live person from 8 a.m.to 9 p.m., Eastern time.
