Brazil moving its embassy to Jerusalem matter of when, not if: Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, on Tuesday ahead of President-elect Jair Bolsonaro's inauguration.

The first public opinion poll after the announcement of snap elections predicted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was heading toward an easy re-election.

Right-wing politician Jair Bolsonaro took an oath of office as Brazil's next president on Tuesday, promising to introduce important changes and reforms in the state.

The Arab League had told Bolsonaro that moving the embassy to Jerusalem would be a setback for relations with Arab countries, according to a letter seen by Reuters earlier in December. But then he backtracked, saying 'it hasn't been decided yet'. He is under intense pressure from Brazil's powerful agriculture sector to not do so, as it could hurt Brazilian exports to Arab nations who view East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Netanyahu was presented with a commemorative postal stamp issued by the Brazilian state of Amazonas in celebration of the modern State of Israel's 70th anniversary.

Trump broke with that consensus a year ago, and in May this year the USA embassy was established in Jerusalem.

Putin responded by announcing that Russian Federation would develop new missiles. Russian Federation and the U.S. have never seen eye-to-eye on several issues.

"We attach enormous importance to Brazil, and Brazil in the context of Latin America", he added.

Netanyahu had told reporters as he flew in to Rio that he was going to raise the embassy topic as a priority when he met Bolsonaro.

The Tuesday inauguration of Bolsonaro was attended by a number of foreign delegations, including representatives of Russian Federation. Nor did they post anything about it on their Twitter accounts, despite Bolsonaro, in particular, being a fervent social media user. Pompeo said that the U.S. effort to "counter Iranian aggression" would continue along with the "protection of Israel" just as it had before.

Israel fears the vacuum will allow arch-foe Iran to make greater inroads into Syria, where it is allied with President Bashar al-Assad.

Bolsonaro was the latest of several far-right leaders around the globe who have come to power by riding waves of anger at the establishment and promising to ditch the status quo.
