Carlos Ghosn indicted on two new charges

Ghosn has been locked up in a small Tokyo jail cell with a toilet and wash basin since his shock arrest Nov 19. His lawyers said Tuesday that he's been granted a bigger room and what they called western-style bed. Prosecutors may come up with new allegations or charge him. Prosecutors said Friday that Ghosn's detention could last for another two months. "We are fearful and very anxious his recovery will be complicated while he continues to endure such harsh conditions and unfair treatment", she said. Kelly's lawyers have denied American executive did anything wrong. Prosecutors have the right to appeal to a court to extend the detention.

"I have been wrongly accused and unfairly detained based on meritless and unsubstantiated accusations", Ghosn told the court in a calm controlled voice. An indictment in Japan allows prosecutors to lay formal charges, a step that takes them close to trial.

The arrest and detention of Ghosn, once among the most celebrated executives in Japan, has sparked worldwide criticism of Japan's justice system, which effectively allows suspects to be held indefinitely and questioned without a lawyer present.

"In general in such cases in Japan, it is indeed the case that bail is not approved before the first trial does take place", he said, adding that it could be six months before the case comes before a judge.

If proven, each of Ghosn's alleged offense may carry a sentence of as much as 10 years, prosecutors have said. The prosecutors haven't officially charged him over these allegations.

The court hearing was requested by Ghosn's lawyers to explain the reasons for his prolonged detention. Those allegations center on Ghosn's handling of investment losses and payments made to a Saudi businessman.

But when one looks at the ploys that the Knicks are using, it seems that focus is more on the younger players and planning ahead. Kanter is on an expiring $18.6 million contract, while Randolph's is worth $11.6 million, northjersey.com noted.

Even if bail were granted, Ghosn would not likely be released until Tuesday given that Monday is public holiday, and all banks will be closed through the long weekend. Kelly has also denied wrongdoing, saying he will restore his name in court.

He could also face charges for breach of trust, reports say.

Ghosn led Nissan Motor Co. for two decades, salvaging the Japanese automaker from bankruptcy. But he remains chairman and CEO of Renault.

Ghosn has been widely credited with saving Nissan from failure in the late 1990s and bringing it together with Renault. That lack of transparency and concern that Nissan will use Ghosn's absence to push for more power within the alliance has heightened tensions between the two automakers. The French government has stood by Ghosn so far, saying he must benefit from the presumption of innocence. Renault's board met Thursday and confirmed compensation paid to directors in the past two years complied with law, while making no decision on Ghosn's role at the carmaker.
