Europe defend the trophy won by Thomas Bjorn and his team at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin in September 2020 and it will be Harrington who will lead the team.
Harrington, who has won three majors and played in six successive Ryder Cups from 1999 to 2010, was a vice-captain when Europe took back the cup under Thomas Bjorn at Paris's Le Golf National previous year.
The three-time major victor succeeds Dane Thomas Bjorn and becomes just the second golfer from the Republic of Ireland to take the reins for the tournament after Paul McGinley, who was victorious in 2014.
Irish star Padraig Harrington has been named as the European Captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup. "I am not as stressed about everything that goes with it".
"I strongly looked at the fact we were going to a golf course that is at least European-style".
"But's it's a new venue at an away match and, on average, we are likely to see three more rookies on the team and I want to make sure I help them find and edge and hopefully get a win". "It's going to take a great deal of my time over the next 18 months figuring out how can I make our team play to the best of their ability".

Nokia 8 Sirocco users using Android 9 Pie will enjoy improvements to their smartphone experience based on their daily phone use. It might be the Nokia 8 .1 Plus, though the Nokia 9 PureView getting a new design treatment would have been a better choice.
"Obviously I'm thrilled to be named as the captain for 2020", Harrington said. It is daunting because you want to do a good job, add to the Ryder cup and Thomas has left it in a very strong place.
Harrington - who has won 30 titles worldwide - was selected by a five man panel, which included McGinley, Bjorn and the losing 2016 skipper Darren Clarke.
The victor of The Open in 2007 at Carnoustie, The Open in 2008 at Royal Birkdale and the 2008 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills, Harrington went 9-13-3 in six consecutive appearances for Europe from 1999 through 2010, playing on four winning teams. Their confidence in me I feel will be well placed.
"It really came down to whether I wanted to. put what is a successful career on the line", Harrington said.
"We were always playing catch up, we were playing a great team, so you learn a lot in adversity".
"You can't do everything as a captain, your very much defined by the quality of your vice-captains and you have to rely on them a lot". I think Padraig will be blessed with an even better team.
Couples captained the United States to three straight Presidents Cup triumphs from 2009 to 2013 and was a vice for the next two, but in 2017 he stated he felt his opportunity to oversee a Ryder Cup had "passed by".
