"I really don't think there's any carry-over from here to the U.S. Open". I have such great memories here and I would love nothing more than to add to it, five months from now.

Red-hot Mickelson and Casey had opposing views on whether to continue as darkness fell, Mickelson putting out for a par at the 16th and saying he was ready to head to 17 as Casey opted to call it a day with a three-foot putt for par in front of him.

He seemed undaunted on Monday, though, hitting his approach to the par-three 17th close before finishing with a birdie at the par-five 18th to get to 19-under for the tournament.

The Portrush man turns 39 in July and while he lost his PGA Tour card previous year and must rely in invitations to fill out his schedule, he wants desperately to be at Royal Portrush for The Open.

"There's still a glimmer", said Casey said of his chances, who was level par for his round when play was suspended.

"I take a lot from this", Casey said.

He also won the Pro-Am with Don Colleran, the chief sales officer for FedEx.

It also would be his first victory on American soil since the Phoenix Open six years ago.

I'm hitting drivers and trying to bomb it down there and hit wedges in, and the rough will be so different and the greens will be so firm it will be a whole different golf course.

"Sometimes I get in my own bubble", Mickelson said.

Casey took a three-shot lead into the final round but ends the week three strokes back after a one-under 71, with the two-time PGA Tour victor finding plenty of positives heading into this week's Genesis Open.

Pebble Beach was so soft that balls were plugging in the fairway when they landed. And it is where he will turn 49 on the final day of the 2019 U.S. Open.

"It's dark and we have a chance to come out on Monday on fresh greens".

He gained ground with birdies at the par-five second and the fourth, then made back-to-back birdies at the ninth and 10th - two of the toughest holes on the course.
