The president mentioned El Paso in his State of the Union address last week as an example to support his demand for a wall.

He concluded, "The president is lying to you to get his border wall".

After a 35-day partial government shutdown that ended January 25, the federal government could close again if congressional Republicans and Democrats cannot hammer out a compromise.

The Make America Great Again rally will take place in El Paso, Texas on Monday at the County Coliseum.

While thousands of Central American migrants wait to enter the United States, a group of American pro-Trump activists linked arms as a human border wall between El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico on Saturday in a symbolic gesture supporting President Trump's push for a permanent border wall.

On the other side of the debate, Trump's campaign put out a video highlighting the need for a wall and featuring El Paso residents. "He will promise a wall and will repeat his lies about the dangers that immigrants pose", O'Rourke wrote Friday on Medium.

A week after he told Oprah Winfrey that he'd decide on a White House run by the end of the month, Beto O'Rourke will take on President Trump Monday evening in dueling rallies along the U.S. -Mexico border in his hometown of El Paso.

U.S. President Donald Trump is slated to visit El Paso on Monday where he will host a rally Monday night.

The statements have been widely rejected by city officials.

In a tweet, El Paso Mayor Dee Margo, a Republican, panned the president: "El Paso was NEVER one of the MOST unsafe cities in the U.S. We've had a fence for 10 years and it has impacted illegal immigration and curbed criminal activity. Law enforcement in our community continues to keep us safe".

U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, a Democrat, asked Trump for an apology to her city.
