Facebook blames long outage on 'server configuration change'

The outage, which plagued Facebook's flagship service as well as Facebook-owned properties Instagram and WhatsApp, lasted for almost 14 hours, according to CNN. It's believed to be the biggest interruption ever suffered by the social network.

Pointing out that the Facebook outage also extended to its other properties, including Instagram and WhatsApp, Sarah Miller, the deputy director at the Open Markets Institute, which is for the break-up of Facebook and other Silicon Valley companies, said, "The more integrated a platform becomes, the greater the risk and reach of epic failures like this one".

The outage appeared to be abating early Thursday.

Unlike Facebook which bases its income on ad revenue, Telegram is funded by user donations, and includes features like encrypted end-to-end messaging. The hashtag #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown were trending on Twitter for much of the day.

Facebook first publicly addressed the issue Wednesday afternoon, acknowledging in a tweet that "some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".
