New York City Police have arrested a man they say is responsible for viciously beating a homeless woman on the NYC subway.

When the man disembarks the train, the 78-year-old woman can be seen holding her head.

The horrendous assault was captured on cellphone video.

The woman tried to block the kicks with her left hand, while stunned passengers watched, the video showed. It was not clear what preceded the attack. At least one other person is spotted in the viral clip recording the attack on their phone.

A video of the incident attracted more than 12 million views online as of late Saturday.

Marc Gomez, 36, was arrested Saturday, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said to The Daily Caller News Foundation over email.

Before the attacker left the train, he shouted about WorldStar, a media outlet that often contains violent videos.

She suffered multiple bruises and was bleeding from cuts to the face, police said.

It happened around 3:10 a.m. on March 10 aboard a northbound 2 train as it pulled into the 238 Street / Nereid Avenue station in the Bronx.

She was treated and released from the hospital and is getting the care, advocacy and support she needs, NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot F. Shea said.
