United Kingdom targets surge in offshore wind power

The government commitment is for offshore wind to produce 30 gigawatts by 2030 creating thousands of so-called “green collar” jobs in the process

Offshore wind farms will generate a third of British electricity in a little over a decade, the government claimed on Thursday, as it announced a new deal with industry.

Reaching a target of more than 30% of electricity coming from offshore wind would also mean that 70% of Britain's energy would be from renewable sources by the end of the period.

This deal will mean for the first time in United Kingdom history there will be more electricity from renewables than fossil fuels, with 70% of British electricity predicted to be from low carbon sources by 2030.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said the deal could result in the number of jobs in offshore wind tripling to 27,000 by 2030, boosting the economies of coastal communities near major projects.

The deal will increase the sector's target for the share of UK-based production for offshore wind projects to 60 per cent, to ensure the £557 million pledged by the Government for future clean power auctions benefit local communities around the country.
