Fight: Ice hockey icon Alex Ovechkin brutalises rookie in Stanley Cup

In shocking scenes, Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin floored Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov with a punch.

Evgeny Svechnikov is said to be a 22-year-old prospect of the Detroit Wings, so the likelihood that he would risk everything for revenge is highly unlikely.

There's debate over whether or not Ovi pushed Svechnikov down onto the ice, but the slow motion replay looks like he may have just lost his balance. In most of the 19 years of the Hurricanes rookie and Siberia native's life, Alex Ovechkin has been Russia's preeminent hockey superstar.

‘Game of Thrones’ season 8 premiere hits new series high
Not only do we, the adoring public, know it, but the talented folks in front of and behind the camera know it, too. In the first season, Bran was scared when Jaime looked at him, but now it's Jaime who's scared.

Alex Ovechkin is already considered of the greatest hockey players of all-time, but his brutal first-period knockout of Andrei Svechnikov was one of those rare highlights that transcended hockey. He's done a little bit of everything for the Capitals this series, tallying two primary assists in Saturday's Game 2 win, scoring a goal in Game 1 and now recording the first fight of the matchup.

The two had been pushing and shoving before dropping the gloves during Game 3 of the first-round playoff match-up, which the defending champ Washington led 2-0 as the series shifted to Carolina. In all, the Hurricanes outshot Washington 45-18, leaving goaltender Petr Mrazek with the easiest of his four career playoff shutouts.
