Chevrolet on Thursday finally came out and confirmed something we've all already known for a long time-that the next-generation C8 Corvette moves to a mid-engine layout. This particular prototype was being driven by Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter with General Motors CEO Mary Bara taking up the co-pilot seat.
The new Corvette C8 makes its debut July 18, 2019, and will go on sale by the end of the year. Chevrolet calls this next-generation model "the most anticipated Corvette ever".
While spy photos showing the C8's low-slung silhouette and vastly different proportions have circulated on the internet for years now, what you're looking at is the first real photo of the vehicle that Chevrolet has supplied-and the first time the company has even acknowledged the existence of what might be the auto industry's worst-kept secret. As for exactly what engine will reside amidships, that's still unknown, but rumors have suggested a 520-horsepower V8 will be on offer.
