Hillsborough One Of Top Counties Most At-Risk For Measles, Study Says

US measles cases still climbing, topping 800 for year

839 cases of measles reported in 23 states; no confirmed cases in Alabama

That's the most since 1994, when 963 were reported for the entire year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday that 75 more measles cases were confirmed last week in 23 states, bringing the USA total to 839 so far this year.

The CDC said new cases have been confirmed in almost half of all states - Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee, and Washington. Since those outbreaks began, providers in New York City and Rockland County have administered more than 40,000 doses of the MMR vaccine.

Last month, the number of measles cases surpassed the record for highest number of cases since authorities declared person-to-person transmission of the disease eliminated in the U.S.in 2000. The last time NY had a big outbreak of the measles was in the early 1990s, when the circumstances were very different. These areas are home to the Orthodox Jewish communities that have been reporting an increasing number of cases since October.

Huawei ready to sign 'no-spy' agreements
Furthermore, concerns about Chinese law requiring Huawei to cooperate with China's intelligence agencies were simply hype. Ren Zhengfei, the company's founder and Meng's father, has denied espionage allegations and a link to China's government.

By the time the outbreak hit in 1990, the CDC estimated that about half of all inner-city toddlers in New York City had not been vaccinated by their second birthday.

"We are making progress against this risky disease, but this outbreak is still a public health emergency and we need the entire community's help to end it", Rockland County Executive Ed Day said in a statement Friday. A few years earlier, he'd founded the Children's Health Fund to bring health care to New York City's poorest areas.

This week a new awareness campaign is set to be released by the New York City health department with ads on bus shelters, in publications and elsewhere targeting the communities in English and Yiddish. "And that is why in Washington state, we are against measles".
