The Grumpy Cat has died

Feline behind 'Grumpy Cat' meme dies

The world's most famous cat and internet legend, Grumpy Cat has passed away.

"Some days are grumpier than others", Grumpy Cat's publicist said in a statement on Friday, sharing news that the internet's favorite meme star has died. An internet celebrity for seven years, Grumpy Cat (aka Tardar Sauce) shuffled off this mortal coil this week, leaving the web a sadder place.

"Her petite size and famous face is likely due to feline dwarfism and her rear end wobbles a bit when she walks due to this; otherwise she is a ideal little kitty!"

On the cat's website, her owners maintain that Grumpy Cat wasn't grumpy at all. It allowed her to quit her job as a waitress at Red Lobster within days of her cat's internet debut, USA media reported.

At the time of her death, she had more than 8.3 million followers on Facebook, 2.5 million followers on Instagram and 1.5 million followers on Twitter. She went on to appear on magazine covers, television advertisements and even starred in her own movie "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever". Grumpy Cat Limited sued the owners of the US coffee company Grenade for exceeding an agreement over the cat's image.

According to his owners, the cat from Arizona, whose real name was Tardar Sauce, "helped millions of people smile".

And, of course, her demise was the top trending story Friday on Twitter, where fans posted thousands of messages of condolence and mourning.
