Walmart offers next-day shipping, speeding deliveries as it battles Amazon

Walmart takes on Amazon Prime with free, next-day deliveries

Challenging Amazon, Walmart unveils one-day delivery on more than 200k items

"Contrary to what you might think, it will cost us less - not more - to deliver orders the next day".

In a shot fired across Amazon's bow, Walmart has announced the launch of one-day delivery on a wide range of general merchandise from Walmart.com, with a minimum purchase.

Walmart said the next-day delivery will be made available in Phoenix and Las Vegas first and will expand to Southern California in the coming days.

Walmart is rolling out next-day delivery beginning in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Southern California, with plans to reach approximately 75% of the USA population this year. The offer is open to all Walmart shoppers.

The move follows Amazon's announcement in late April that it intends to make one-day delivery the default for Prime members, who now pay $119 a year for free two-day shipping, along with other perks.

A customer can visit Walmart.com and toggles into the NextDay delivery service to view items that are eligible for free NextDay delivery.

The service will be available for approximately 220,000 items that are "most frequently purchased" online.

US President Donald Trump has suggested the Federal Reserve could support the US in its simmering trade battle with China . The Trump administration had pledged up to $12 billion in aid to help offset losses for crops hit by Chinese tariffs.

Such orders are consolidated in boxes and travel short distances by ground, making them less costly than delivering items from multiple locations, according to Lore. Amazon has declined to say when the switch will happen, but it already offers one-day delivery for some items in certain areas.

"Our new NextDay delivery isn't just great for customers, it also makes good business sense", Marc Lore, President and CEO, Walmart eCommerce U.S. said in a statement on the company's website.

After coyly hinting about a major shift in its shipping policies, Walmart has filed the latest salvo in the retail wars, announcing free one-day shipping starting this week.

The company also created a grocery pickup and delivery service that is expected to provide pickup in 3,100 stores and delivery from 1,600 stores by the end of the year, covering 80 and 50 percent of the US population, respectively.

The move ramps up Walmart's efforts to keep pace in electronic commerce with Amazon, which offers speedy deliveries to its Prime subscription members.

Walmart also said it is positioned to offer even faster delivery to customers within the near future.

Walmart has been planning free next day shipping for a while.
