Cyclone VAYU intensifies into very severe cyclonic storm

"The intensity depends on how long the cyclone travels over the ocean". Now, it would hit the Gujarat coast anywhere between Veraval in the south and Dwarka in the west Thursday afternoon. It was predicted to move almost northwards and cross the coast of Gujarat between Porbandar and Diu around Veraval at a speed of 145-155 km per hour, likely to escalate to 170 km per hour on Thursday morning.

The weather experts ruled out any repeat of the conditions of June 2015 when a similar low pressure area had resulted into killing hundreds of people in Karachi and other parts of Sindh. So far, more than 74,000 people have been relocated from the affected coastal areas.

"Many people living near the coast are not willing to shift and leave their homes".

Sardar Sarfraz, the department's spokesperson, said that the cyclone is 700 kilometre away from Karachi.

Improved forecasting models, public awareness campaigns and well-drilled evacuation plans help the eastern state of Odisha prepare well.

"Praying for the safety and well-being of all those affected by Cyclone Vayu", Modi tweeted.
