Soccer stars Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar are leading the way in terms of being the highest paid athletes in the world.

Basketball and football dominated Forbes's top 100 list of the highest-paying sports, and there was a wide variety of nationalities amongst the top athletes.

The American business magazine calculated the athletes' earnings by adding up their prizemoney, salaries and endorsements between June 2018 and June 2019.

Canelo, who defeated Gennady Golovkin last September to become the unified middleweight champion, inked a very lucrative deal last October, signing a five-year 11-fight contract with streaming network DAZN worth $365 million.

Kohli is last on the list of top-100 athletes, headed by Barcelona and Argentina football superstar Lionel Messi, announced on Tuesday.

Athletes from 10 sports made the top 100, with National Basketball Association stars leading the way.

The Barcelona star, who ranked second behind Floyd Mayweather Jr.in 2018, leads all athletes with $127 million in total earnings, including $35 million in endorsements, according to Forbes. The Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil star earned a total of $105 million.

In the "top 10" of the classification are also football players Russell Wilson (79 million euros) and Aaron Rodgers (78.8 million euros), and NBA basketball players LeBron James (78.6 million euros), Stephen Curry (70.4 million euros) and Kevin Durant (57.7 million euros).

Manchester United's Paul Pogba is the highest earning Premier League player in 44th place with $49.8 million.
